The Ludwigs and the Drum Kit
William F. and Theobald Ludwig
Before the drum kit, a band needed several drummers. The Ludwig brothers built a practical bass drum pedal in 1909, so one player could keep the kick with a foot while playing snare and cymbals. The kit was nicknamed the "trap set", short for contraption.
Still heard: One person, four limbs, one kit: every drum loop and drum plugin is built around it. (The trap genre is named for trap houses, not the kit.)
