The Yamaha DX7
FM synthesizer
Yamaha licensed frequency modulation synthesis from John Chowning's research at Stanford. The DX7's electric piano and bell sounds are all over 80s ballads and pop.
Still heard: The "DX piano" is a staple in R&B and synth pop plugin libraries.
