Adolphe Sax
Inventor of the saxophone
The Belgian instrument maker patented the saxophone in 1846, meant to bridge brass and woodwinds in military bands. Jazz made it a lead voice, from Coleman Hawkins to Coltrane.
Still heard: Sax hooks in R&B, funk, pop and Afrobeat horn lines.
