Fela Kuti and Tony Allen
The makers of Afrobeat
In Lagos, Fela mixed highlife, jazz and funk into long, political grooves. Drummer Tony Allen invented the Afrobeat drum pattern, and Fela said there would be no Afrobeat without him.
Still heard: Interlocking percussion and patient grooves under today's afrobeats.
