George D. Hay and the Grand Ole Opry
WSM radio, Nashville
Hay started the WSM Barn Dance in 1925 and renamed it the Grand Ole Opry in 1927. Broadcast across much of the country, it made Nashville the home of country music and gave Bill Monroe and many others their audience.
Still heard: The Opry is still on the air, the longest-running radio show in the US.
