Larry Graham's Slap Bass
Sly and the Family Stone
Playing in his mother's duo after they lost their drummer, Graham started thumping the bass strings with his thumb for the kick and plucking for the snare. Thumpin' and pluckin' became slap bass.
Still heard: Slap bass is a funk signature, and a lesson in playing the drums on a bass.
