Leon Theremin
Inventor of the theremin
The Russian physicist built an instrument played without touching it: hands near two antennas control pitch and volume. Its eerie wail became the sound of 1950s sci-fi films like The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Still heard: Spooky film cues and synth lead glides owe it.
