U-Roy and Toasting
Jamaican sound system DJ
U-Roy talked and chanted over instrumental versions of hits, a style called toasting. His 1970 records for Duke Reid, like "Wake the Town", topped the Jamaican charts.
Still heard: Toasting fed dancehall, and through Jamaican sound systems in the Bronx, rapping.
